There are many different greenhouse designs. Some structure are very simple in design and others more complex. Some need a foundation and others definitely require one. A design such as the hoop greenhouse doesn’t require one. A more complex design such as a victorian style greenhouse should have a foundation and floor. Its design is built to accommodate people walking around in the structure and is a more permanent structure than the hoop greenhouse .
Although the simpler greenhouse designs usually require no foundation or floor, they do need to be attached to ground to keep them from blowing away in the wind. The method in which the greenhouse is attached to the ground could simply be metal rods like that used to build the frame of a hoop greenhouse. In some cases some sort of trench should be built around the structure to keep rain water from entering into the structure .
The larger more complex structures tend to be more permanent and require a foundation and floor. This will help keep the structure stable. This will allow for larger items to be stored there and more easily wheeled in and out of the structure .
Glass covered structures such as a victorian greenhouse should have a concrete slab or wood foundation. Generally the wood foundation is the simpler of the two to build. Both foundations require the ground to be level and the location to be correct .
If your greenhouse does require a foundation and floor, having proper greenhouse plans to guide in their construction is recommended. There are many good resources on the internet to guide in their construction. Some of these resources will be free of charge. Others will require payment. The resources that require payment generally are more detailed and may well be worth the money you spend .
