LEDs have been a revolution in lighting and signage. They last longer, consume significantly less electricity and generally are the lighting solution of the future. However a success story always attracts imitations and nowadays we can find many cheap versions of LED bulbs and signs that do not perform up to the LED industry standards. Here are some tips for what to look for when you are making a new LED purchase .
THE price of LEDs has come down considerably over the last couple of years, as more investment has gone into improving technology and more and more people are using them. But, if you are tempted by bargain basement prices on an LED product of any sort, beware. Good quality LEDs should cost more than a conventional fluorescent product. They pay for themselves several times over in saved electricity and maintenance costs. Cheap imitations may cost less, but they don’t last as long and so you lose money on the deal in the end .
There are several big names in LED lighting technology that have a reputation to live up to for producing quality LED products. If in doubt stick with these recognised names and avoid unknown
Test the product
Check out the sign or light that you are buying, to make sure that it is good quality. Some general pointers that show a good quality LED product, whether a sign or a light bulb, are as follows :
The light should come on instantly as soon as the switch is pushed.
There should be no flickering
The light, particularly in LED signs, should be evenly distributed over the whole area of the sign,
with no dark shadows or bright hotspots.
Light output should remain constant over time.
LED Lights and signs come in different colours, but the colours should always be clean and clear.
The LED product should not continue to consume power when it is switched off .
Ask for a warranty
Most good quality LED products come with a warranty against defects in manufacturing and materials, which can range from one year to as much as ten years in the case of some LED light bulb
In the case of LED signs it is usually the light modules themselves, which are covered by the warranty, not the whole sign. This means that the modules will be replaced if they are found to be faulty within the time period specified by the warranty .
Make sure you buy good quality LED products and you will find that you save money in energy costs several times over the initial purchase price .
