Unless you are a strict minimalist, for most of us the longer we live in a single location the more likelihood we will end up filling up all the spaces. If you look at someone who has lived in their home for 30 or 40 years you’ll notice there is hardly any space where there isn’t something. Does this also mean that you run out of space to put stuff, and therefore you end up putting boxes of your belongings in the garage and attic? Although for most Americans this is the case, it does not have to be this way, and I’d like to explain why .
You see, you may have more space than you think. If you walk around your house you will see areas where the walls have extra space based on the floor plan and architectural design. Behind such walls is empty space. Yes, there may be ductwork, or just unusable space such as underneath stairs. However, who says a staircase can’t have a series of drawers which can slide out from the vertical surfaces between steps? You could easily get quite a few drawers for free by utilizing the space. This of course is just one for instance .
Often between the walls in your home there is nothing more than a wood frame and drywall. Sometimes there is wiring going between, but often there is none. All of these spaces make perfect bookshelves, sticking out from one side of the wall or the other, or perhaps both. It will not hurt the structural integrity by filling up that space with books, or putting in extra horizontal pieces as needed at the heights and levels you wish to use .
Sometimes it just takes a little bit of thinking outside the box to understand the exact dimensions within the box, within your home, and all those cubbyholes which are not being used for anything. Do I mean to explain this to you so that you use up all this unused space, and continue to clutter your life ?
No, I believe you should get organized in all aspects of your life especially at home in your garage, your closet, your attic, your kitchen, and so forth. But when it’s all said and done, if you still need more space, you ought to consider some of the empty spaces between the walls, there’s a lot more there than meets the eye. Indeed it is my hope you will please consider all this and think on it .
