God save the humans from NEO space rock bombardment! Well, don’t laugh just because you escaped the cold war without being nuked, or later potential calamities such as bird flu, Y2K, or global terrorism, the threat of the Earth being hit by a large asteroid like the one that supposedly took out our dinosaur ancestors will happen again. It really isn’t “if” but “when” because it happens often, on a cosmic time scale that is. We should be concerned with NEOs (Near Earth Objects) and NASA is studying this along with the international community, devising a plan .
The Wall Street Journal had an interesting editorial piece published on February 14, 2013 titled; “A Warning From the Asteroid Hunters,” which stated; “The likelihood in this century of an asteroid impact with 700 times the destructive power of Hiroshima A-bomb: 30%.”
Interestingly enough, the very next day the CBS Space News had an article “Adding meteor news briefing; details and quotes,” which stated; “NASA’s Meteoroid Environments Office said the blast was the equivalent of 300,000 tons of TNT, nearly 20 times more powerful than the 16-kiloton atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945,” describing a 7K metric ton, 15-meter diameter asteroid that hit the Earth’s atmosphere traveling at 40,000 mph, this space rock hit in a remote area in Russia .
The timing of the first article the day before seems ominous and ironic as the very next day we got smacked. Of course the first article was describing DA14, which passed by just 17,000 miles above the Earth’s surface, but the one that hit us came from a totally different trajectory, and this asteroid hit us by surprise you see .
But what can we do you ask? First, we need to know when a direct strike asteroid will intersect with our planet’s future path, and that means cataloging all that is out there and start tracking them. Those which have a high probability of hitting us, well, we’ll need to re-direct them or blast them out of the sky. We’ll also need to know what they are made of, because a solid iron asteroid poses a greater potential of damage than one made of ice for instance .
Perhaps, these most recent events might just be a wake-up call for all humans that, just because we live on this beautiful pale blue dot doesn’t mean this is a safe platform, and it certainly isn’t a guaranteed sanctuary, at least not forever, unless we take precautions and work to build an adequate defense shield. If you’d like to discuss that topic at a much higher level, then please shoot me an email at your earliest convenience .
