If you have received a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, you have probably done a lot of research online to learn more about your condition. While diabetes used to be a death sentence, almost assuring fatal complications at some point, it can be managed in a way that simply requires lifestyle modifications. But, before you can stop the progression of the effects of Type 2 diabetes, you must first understand what it is and what it isn’t. There are a lot of myths surrounding a diabetes diagnosis.
Let’s take a look at a few of the most common diabetes myths and why they are untrue…
First of all, many people think diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar. This is untrue. The causes of diabetes are not completely understood. Eating too much sugar in the form of simple carbohydrates can disrupt the normal blood sugar patterns of a person with diabetes, but it doesn’t cause the disease itself. Sugar certainly disrupts body glucose levels which can cause issues with hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, but it certainly does not cause the disease itself.
There are two main forms of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. The most common form is Type 2 diabetes which used to be known as adult-onset diabetes. Unfortunately, due to lifestyle changes over the last few decades, many children are developing Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is caused when the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin or the insulin being produced in your body isn’t working properly. With all the body cells then “thumbing” their noses at insulin and refusing to let the blood sugar in, sugar collects in your blood. Blood sugar can remain chronically high giving fasting blood sugar levels of 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L), or higher.
It’s reasonably common to find people have conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), or the metabolic syndrome before being diagnosed with full-blown Type 2 diabetes.
Another common myth around diabetes is that carbohydrates are always bad. This isn’t the case either. You want to stay away from simple carbs such as those found in processed foods, pastries and fast food. And anything white! Eating complex carbs will allow you to balance your blood sugar and get important nutrients in your body. These complex carbs include fruits, vegetables and even some whole-grain breads.
The answer is to eat healthy carbs and fiber-rich foods.
Finally, another common myth related to diabetes is that you will have to give up all of your favorite foods. Just as with anything, moderation is key. You might have to change the way you prepare your favorite foods or eat them alongside healthier options.
In addition, reducing portion sizes is another healthy way to still get what you like to eat… while balancing everything out.
As with anything, speak with your doctor before making any major changes to your eating plan. Understanding what to eat and when to eat it, is critical to overcoming your Type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is no longer a condition you must just live with. It need not slowly and inevitably get worse. You can take control of the disease… and take back your health. Make sure you understand the benefits of eating complex carbohydrates and fiber.
