A common question I hear from those considering a career with the United States Armed Services is as follows: “What is the minimum score that I will need to get into the… (insert branch here)” In this article I will help you understand why this is not the right attitude for your ASVAB preparation
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery or ASVAB is the military version of an entrance exam. This exam is designed to test you on the various academic skills that you have picked up throughout high school. There are a number of ways to look at the score, determined by the specific criteria that you are trying to qualify for
The AFQT is the most commons scoring criteria. This score combines your test scores from multiple sections and helps determine if you even qualify for your branch of choice
AFQT looks at the following:
Mathematics Knowledge (MK)
Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
Verbal Knowledge (WK)
Paragraph Comprehension (PC)
Many recruits will look at the above criteria and ask:
So what do I have to score on each of the above sections
That is not the correct attitude to use when planning to study for your ASVAB for a number of reasons
You will likely score lower on the actual exam compared to practice
No matter how well prepared you are, you will likely be nervous as you take the actual ASVAB. These nerves will cause you to misread a few questions and therefore miss a few points. If you studied just enough to ‘get in’ and miss those few questions, you will fail your ASVAB
If you are applying for a competitive rate or MOS a higher score will help you beat out the competition
The military is cutting budgets, shrinking its forces, and decreasing the number of openings for many of the most desired jobs. Therefor if you are competing with other applicants for these jobs they will have to find which applicant is the most competitive and therefor the most worthy. Once criteria they look at are your ASVAB scores
Your ASVAB scores count for more than just simple admission into the service
Once you are accepted into the branch and job of your choice, your ASVAB scores will STILL remain with you. As you are moving up in the ranks and applying for promotions and pay raises, one of the factors taken into account are your scores.
Given how important this exam is, can you really afford to study for just the bare minimum requirements?
